About Bouncing and Thought Leaps

How can we model the context of our thinking so that thought leaps become possible? Thought leaps that bet on altered insights like a gambler betting on winning by chance.

Not waiting to be asked

In Renaissance Europe, printers (with typesetters and illustrators in their employ) performed an essential editorial role in the politics of making knowledge public, deciding what would be published and qualifying texts with printed marginalia. In our digital culture there are no such gatekeepers, for better and for worse. Amateur content creators are empowered by access to tools and decentralised publishing networks, and yet the information space is made infinitely more corruptible. Perhaps the most urgent question we must confront as communication designers is this: How will we create the opportunities to do important work? We simply cannot wait to be asked.

Unpacking Playfulness

How can we make freedom and playfulness, traditionally granted to artists, accessible to a wider audience? And how can we design situations that stimulate activity and participation, potentially leading to transformation in both viewers and social contexts? In this talk, Amsterdam-based designer Tereza Ruller (studio The Rodina) explores these questions by introducing the term “performative design” and identifying action components in graphic design processes and outcomes. Let’s discuss how designing interactive environments and playful situations can spark unplanned discoveries and foster deeper engagement.
